Unsafe School Choice Option (USCO)

Purpose

The Career Academy Network of Public Schools (CANoPS) is committed to providing safe, and supportive, learning environments for all students. In accordance with the federal Unsafe School Choice Option (USCO) provision, CANoPS establishes this practice to ensure that students who are victims of violent criminal offenses or who attend schools identified as persistently dangerous have the opportunity to transfer to a safe public school within the network.

Student Right to Transfer

    1. Option #1: Any student who is the victim of a violent criminal offense at school will be offered the opportunity to transfer to another safe public school within the CANoPS network.
    2. Option #2: Should a school be designated as persistently dangerous, consideration will be given that students most impacted at that school will be provided the option to transfer to another like safe school within the network, to the extent space and resources allow.
