Pathways Courses Include:

Year 1 Principles of Human Services

Principles of Human Services introduces students to careers in human services and the role of human service professionals while building cultural competence and real-world awareness.
- Explores the history of human services, career pathways, target populations, and community agencies.
- Includes a required job shadowing experience in a human services setting (minimum four hours to meet Ivy Tech requirements).
- Emphasizes cultural awareness, diversity, and understanding of racial and ethnic groups in the United States.
- 4 hour job shadowing or community service requirement.

Year 2 Fundamentals of Human Services

Fundamentals of Human Services explores the foundational knowledge and skills required for effective practice in the human services field. Students examine helping relationships, diversity and cultural competence, communication, ethics, and crisis response, while reflecting on personal strengths and professional growth.
- Helping Relationships & Ethics: Personal values, professional ethics, communication, and problem-solving in human services.
- Diversity & Cultural Competence: Understanding values, language, gestures, customs, and major racial and ethnic groups in the U.S.
- Crisis Awareness & Intervention: Identifying crisis situations, abuse indicators, and applying basic crisis intervention skills.

Year 3 Community Health Worker

Community Health Worker focuses on preparing learners for care coordination and case management roles serving individuals, families, and communities.
- Core Skills & Ethics: Care coordination, case management, coaching, cultural competence, Human Services Code of Ethics, and professional practice.
- Field Foundations: Overview of intellectual and developmental disabilities and key issues in community social service.
- Career & Resources: Employment pathways, professional development, and navigation of community resources and services.
