Our Charter

In the state of Indiana, public charter schools are required to meet state and federal accountability requirements (Public Law 221 – Indiana’s A-F model and No Child Left Behind). In addition to the regular educational requirements, public charter schools must also meet the requirements set forth in their charter. In addition to these requirements, charter schools are subject to a rigorous review at the end of each charter term, in order to determine whether or not the school’s charter should be renewed.

About the Indiana Charter School Board

The Indiana Charter School Board (ICSB) is a statewide authorizer responsible for reviewing, approving, and overseeing charter schools across Indiana. Established in 2011, the board was created to ensure that families have access to high-quality public school options that meet diverse community needs.

Unlike traditional school districts, the ICSB does not operate schools directly. Instead, it evaluates charter school applications, grants charters to qualified organizers, and monitors performance to ensure schools meet rigorous standards for academic achievement, financial health, and organizational stability.

Key responsibilities include:

Reviewing applications – assessing whether new charter schools have strong academic models, leadership, and community support.
Overseeing performance – holding schools accountable for results, closing those that consistently underperform.
Providing transparency – publishing accountability reports and ensuring compliance with state and federal laws.
Encouraging innovation – supporting diverse school models that give families more educational choices.

Today, the ICSB authorizes a wide range of schools, from college-prep programs to career-focused academies, serving students in multiple regions of the state. By maintaining high standards while fostering flexibility, the board plays a central role in advancing educational opportunities for Indiana families.
